June 24, 2013

We woke up at 7:15 and had breakfast at the hostel, like we always do. Upon our arrival at the shop we found out that there were no dust masks available for us, so we didn’t do any planking on the canoe.  We talked with Rosillo about the Phoenician boat project and we held a piece of planking against the side of the boat and drew a line on the planking where it met up to the last piece of planking in order to get the planks tight together. Then Rosillo used the band saw to cut the plank where we drew the line. We then marked out on the plank where all the mortises needed to be cut in order to align the two planks. We then used ancient techniques of cutting the mortises with two sizes of chisels. We accomplished eight mortis holes using the ancient technique. We left the shop at 1:00.

We all rested during the day after work some people like me took a nap because we were up late due to the festival the night before. We went to dinner at a pizza place; the pizzas were large personal sized Neapolitan style. The pizza I had was called the 4 seasons and had a combination of white asparagus, artichoke, fresh anchovies, ham, cheese, and tomatoes sauce this was all on a fresh thin crust that was rolled right before the pizza went in the oven. Then the waiter asked if we wanted some spices, and he gave us a hot (spicy) oil to dress the pizza with. This was the best pizza experience I have ever had. The pizza was also not uniform in the toppings which gave each piece its own flavor combination which I found very enjoyable to have a new flavor with each bite. After dinner we went back to the hostel and went to bed.
